Every once in a while a story comes along that moves you in a fantastic way, unless you record everything that is shown on the Hallmark channel that is. In the true spirit of our featured cause for the month, Project:AK-47, we are proud to bring you a story of redemption that truly fits the bill. Project:AK-47 is a group of people who stand to bring change in several countries where child soldiers are used to this day. Aki Ra was once a child soldier in Cambodia where he would plant landmines, sometimes as many as 4000 to 5000 a week. Now an adult, he made up his mind to demine the villages that he once rigged. At the time he began his work it was illegal for him to do so because of his lack of proper equipment, but he couldn’t stand to see people injured. Today he meets legal requirements and villages request him to come to where they are and do the same for them. His main focus is on rural areas overlooked by the government. Now he has a team and together they have removed over 50,000 mines to date. Another pet project that Aki Ra has taken on is an orphanage that feeds and houses many children some of whom have been injured by mines. Let me start by saying that I have not seen such a creative, fun, and inexpensive video since Ok Go did “Here It Goes Again”. I nearly fell out of my half functional office chair the first time I gazed in wonder at the ingenuity of it all. The whole video was made for around $500 dollars and it was done in one continuous shot. That alone is enough to make my heart go pitter-patter. This opens a whole new world to creative artists looking to get their product in front of eyes. In Tim’s case he is bordering 100,000 views so far and it has only been out just over a month. The other thing that struck me was the artistic feel to the set design. At first glance you might imagine that was more about the process of making the single shot dynamic work, but the more that I watch the video, I am impressed with the attention to detail in the layout of the scenes. The moving parts of the sets take what could have been a very static picture and put a whole new dimension to it all. Oh yeah, and the song. As a Brite employee I have all the songs on our website carved out in a special place located in my brain. I was familiar with Tim’s work, but this song is a hit in my book, which is not to say that I don’t like his other works. At the very least it is a teenage anthem, but it somehow resonates with a majority of people. I would dare to say that most people have had a “the one that got away” moment in their lifetime.
